Fall Has a New YSL Libre — But Can It Beat Last Year?

Fall fragrance season is officially here, and apparently YSL has decided to make choosing a favorite Libre impossible.

Last year, Libre Vanille Couture had me in a chokehold. That rich Bourbon vanilla, vanilla caviar, orange blossom, lavender and touch of rum made it exactly what I want when the weather starts cooling down — warm, sweet, sexy and just a little over the top. It smelled like fall dressed up for somewhere expensive.

Now YSL is back for 2026 with Libre Santal Couture, and instead of leaning into another gourmand, they went woody.

Santal Couture keeps that familiar Libre DNA of lavender and orange blossom but wraps it around a warm, creamy sandalwood heart. The result is smoother, woodier and a little more sophisticated than last year's vanilla bomb. Vanille Couture says dessert and a fur coat. Santal Couture says cashmere, expensive boots and don't ask me what I paid for my perfume.

So which one wins?

For me, Vanille Couture is still the cozier fall scent, especially if you love sweet gourmands. But Santal Couture is the one I'm reaching for when I want something warm without smelling overly sweet.

And honestly? I'm not sure this is an either/or situation.
