Gucci Mémoire, you hold my heart. Every day, always.

Gucci Mémoire is one of those fragrances that I think is much easier to appreciate once you stop expecting it to smell like a typical Gucci fragrance.

This is not a loud fragrance. It doesn't walk into the room before you do, and it isn't built around some huge attention-grabbing opening. Instead, it has this quiet, slightly strange quality that makes you want to keep smelling your wrist to figure out exactly what it is that you like about it.

And I really like it.

The opening is fresh and green, but there is something softer underneath it that keeps it from becoming too sharp. Chamomile is one of the notes that stands out to me, and I think that's a big part of what makes Mémoire feel different. There's a gentle herbal quality here, but it isn't the kind of herbal scent that makes you think of cleaning products or a bottle of essential oil.

As it dries down, it becomes warmer and more comfortable. The woods start to show themselves, and the fragrance takes on this almost nostalgic character. That's probably where the name Mémoire makes the most sense. There is something familiar about it, but I can't quite attach it to one specific memory.

That's what makes it interesting.

A lot of fragrances try to create nostalgia by smelling like something we've smelled a thousand times before. Mémoire takes a different route. It feels nostalgic without being obvious about what you're supposed to be remembering.

And that's also why I don't think this is going to be everyone's fragrance.

If you're looking for something sweet, sexy and immediately recognizable, there are plenty of other fragrances that are going to give you that experience. Mémoire is more understated. It has personality, but you have to give it a little attention.

Personally, that's part of the appeal.

I also think this is a fragrance that works particularly well when you don't want your fragrance to dominate everything around you. It has enough character that you know you're wearing something interesting, but it doesn't feel like you're trying to make an entrance.

It's unusual without being difficult, elegant without being overly formal, and different without feeling like it's trying desperately to be different. That's a combination I appreciate more and more.

I can understand why some people might overlook this one. Even the name doesn't exactly tell you what you're getting. But once you actually wear it, Mémoire starts to make sense.

For me, this is one of those fragrances that doesn't need to shout to get my attention.

It just needs to smell this good.
