Kayali: A Fragrance Brand That Gets It Right

There are a lot of fragrance brands that get attention because they are trendy, heavily marketed, or attached to a celebrity or influencer. Kayali is one of the few where I think the attention is actually deserved. What I like about Kayali is that the fragrances are easy to understand without being boring. They are recognizable, but they still have enough going on to make you want to keep smelling them. That sounds simple, but it is surprisingly difficult to accomplish.

Kayali also seems to understand what people actually want from fragrance today. These are scents that are meant to be worn, enjoyed, layered, and experimented with. You don't necessarily have to be a fragrance collector or know every note in the book to appreciate them. And that's probably one of the biggest strengths of the brand.

Some of the fragrances are sweet. Some are fruity. Some lean more floral or musky. And yes, there are definitely a few that are stronger than others depending on your taste. But even when a particular Kayali fragrance isn't something I would personally wear, I can usually understand what they were trying to accomplish.

The layering aspect is another thing I really appreciate. Kayali has made mixing fragrances feel less intimidating. Instead of treating perfume like there is one "correct" way to wear it, the brand encourages you to play around with different combinations. That's something I think more fragrance houses should embrace.

I also think Kayali has done a good job making the fragrances feel luxurious without making them feel completely inaccessible. The presentation certainly helps with that. The bottles look expensive, the fragrances have personality, and there is a sense that some thought went into creating an entire experience rather than simply putting another perfume on a shelf. But ultimately, the bottles aren't what keeps me interested. It's the fragrances themselves.

Kayali has built a collection that gives people a lot of different directions to go, and I think that's why the brand has become so popular. There is something very approachable about the collection, but there is also enough variety that you can find something that feels like your own.

Is every Kayali fragrance going to work for everyone? Absolutely not. Fragrance is too personal for that. But I think the brand deserves credit for creating scents that people actually want to wear instead of simply creating something that looks good in a department store display.

For me, that's what makes Kayali interesting. It's fun, it's modern, and it doesn't take itself so seriously that you forget perfume is supposed to be fun.
